The Reunion

Ok. So. I went to my TWENTIETH high school reunion recently and the trauma of it has caused me to delay blogging about it. I say "trauma" but it was actually pretty fun, suffice it to say. We had a pretty good turnout (about half of our classmates showed up, even though we had a small class to begin with that was still a pretty good amount) which I'm sure made the planning committee happy since it took everyone freakin' forever to respond to them and I think they were worried that no one would show. Unfortunately, there were a few that didn't make it that I was hoping to see...especially Lynn and Michelle.

Here's a collection of my random thoughts from that weekend (take them in jest, and not offense!):
  • Where did all their hair go?? - It amazed me how many of the guys were bald, ESPECIALLY since most were so proud of the gel-enforced spikes and mullets they were sportin' back in the day! I was trying to convince everyone that I deserved the award for "the one who lost the most hair" since mine was down to my knees in high school and I was trying to save them some embarassment, but the baldies won out...as they should.
  • I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's packed on some pounds. - Personally, I like to think of those extra pounds as necessary for survival. One of these days I may find myself on "Survivor" or "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!" and I might actually have to live off that extra layer of me, though I seriously doubt it!
  • Wow! THEY have kids! - Maybe it was who actually put away their "playa" ways and settled down combined with fear that they've actually passed on their DNA, but there were a few surprises for me. Then again, I have a child...and I know you're all scared. So, touche'.
  • They've mellowed over the years. - And I know no one was thinking THIS about ME...although in actuality, it is true. Somehow, though, I think the fact that I posed for the group picture doing the splits negates what I'm trying to say here.
  • Really? They couldn't bother coming ACROSS TOWN for a couple of nights to mingle with some old classmates?? - Sorry, but this REALLY surprised me. I think if I were IN TOWN, and as much as I would look for an excuse, I would make it for at least the Saturday night dinner. Curiosity would have gotten the better of me.
I guess I'm just of the opinion that it's been freakin' TWENTY years...let bygones be bygones. Sure, there were still cliques and groups that stuck to their old friends, but that's part of it...seeing your old buddies, reminiscing about the past, how young and stupid we were. But another part of it is seeing how much we've changed, what life has shown us, how we've learned some lessons...and how we still have room for improvement.

I wonder what another (five or) ten years will bring...

Does this really matter? Who reads this anyway? Seriously. Okay, fine. I'm probably the only Poli-pino you'll ever meet and I: like to cook up a good meal (but if given the choice I'd rather eat out); watch TV and films from here and there; love to laugh and try to do it often; hate to cry but end up doing so...and often; believe we ALL make a difference to SOMEONE at SOME POINT; love long walks on the beach, it's cheesy, I know, but I do love them especially with my family; wish I was as erudite as Stephen Fry, as cleverly comedic as (too many to name here) and as oblivious as Mr. Bean. Obviously I could go on...that's why I started the blog!
