Swear. True story.
I'm just trying to book a band.
And hire the entertainers.
I'm thinking dancers and very Cirque du Soleil-esque stuff. Have you ever seen a Cirque show?? There's so much going on it's difficult to focus on one thing. It's kinda like being in my head actually. So, yeah. Now you know how distracted/-ing I can be.
What was I saying?
What IS going on in that head of mine?? Probably just a bunch of fluff mixed in with my plans to rule the world...

Day 03 — A Favorite TV Show
I actually have an answer for this one. I have more than one, per usual, but I'm going to format this post pretty much like my friend MK did, with my own little additional info. It'll be pretty confessorial in tone because I'm going to reveal that I watch way too much TV. Oh wait, you KNEW that. Well, let's just get it all out there then...
I could write about all the shows I watched growing up like The Love Boat, The Cosby Show, Diff'rent Strokes, Family Ties, The Facts of Life, The Jeffersons, All in the Family and the like, but I'm going to try and stay with current shows.
Shows I will stop to watch...regardless of if I should be doing something more important:
Strictly Come Dancing - This is the original version, the one the States bought and turned into Dancing With the Pseudo-Famous, er I mean Dancing with the Stars. I like the British version MUCH better. Ask me about it over a cocktail, and I'll rave about the costumes...the hosts...the little extra show called It Takes Two. I'm ridiculous. Love me regardless. Please?
Big Love - Seriously. I know it's not reality TV, but I am sucked into this tale of LDS vs. Mormon Polygamists like a furball in a Dyson. You may have your "Real Housewives of...", I'll take Barbara, Nikki and Margene.
American Idol - I'm back, good and bad. I wanted to see if this season could pull it out of its mire. So far, so good. Randy still gets on my nerves a bit. Steven can sometimes be a bit creepy rather than rock-and-roll. J-Lo is on the road to becoming OVER-commercial, I swear she's endorsing everything these days. On the another note, I secretly want to interview Ryan Seacrest. I think he may be this generation's Dick Clark. I know he's aspiring to be.
Shows I currently DVR:
Survivor - I still can't get enough of the group dynamics that play out in this show. I'm a sucker for the social game. I think I could totally outwit, outlast and outplay in that portion. It's the physical and the survival parts where I would well and truly suck. There's no way I could deal with the bugs, snakes, and other creepy crawlies out there (contestants like Russell included).
House - The cranky-Vicodin-popping-rehab-returning Dr. House is as annoying as he is brilliant. Like me. Less the Vicodin-popping-rehab-returning and doctor bits.
CSI, Law and Order, NCIS, Criminal Minds, and all their spin-offs - I know it's sad. But it's true. I watch 'em all. Procedural drama? I'm there.
The Walking Dead - Okay, so not currently DVR'd since the season is over, but we'll be watching when it returns.
Other BRITISH Shows I watch regularly; I'd blame my husband, but I know better. I'm really the culprit:
EastEnders - The only soap opera I've been hooked on in twenty years. I used to watch American ones when I was a teen, but stopped and never looked back. (Ok. So. This one I can blame K for...I wouldn't be as involved if I didn't have him to gossip with about it!)
Live at the Apollo - Best of British humor right now.
Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow - Comedians that are about to make it big...or still trying to...
Really. There are so many others that I haven't listed here. You'd really be surprised at the amount of television viewing I do. But honestly, I'm only watching TV from about 730-1030pm every night with an occasional 3-4 hours a week during the daytime hours while I'm ironing or doing other things around the house. Max 25 hours a week? Is that bad? LOL
Oh, but my absolute favorite the last few years...even more than Lost, or 24, or any of the other shows I watched religiously....it ABSOLUTELY has to be Dexter. I might have to find a support group. I'm rooting for the serial killer. There's something wrong with that, right? Every season I say the writers won't do as well as the last season, and, so far, every season they have. Season 4, the one with John Lithgow, has to be the best one IMHO. I already can't wait for the next season...

Day 02 - A Favorite Movie
"Life isn't like in the movies. Life... is much harder." ~ Said by Alfredo, in Cinema ParadisoAs a self-proclaimed cinephile, movies have always been "The Great Escape" for me. (See what I did there?) Again, singling out a favorite is difficult because movies, as with music, are mood-dependent in my world. And I'm fickle. And I keep adding new ones with every year that passes because, luckily, good ones still keep being made, albeit fewer and farther between. I'm still on a never-ending mission to see all the movies that made AFI's Top 100 list, which is proving to be difficult since it keeps evolving over time.
I've loved going to the movies since I was young. I especially loved going to movie theaters on base because before they showed the feature film they always played the national anthem. The GI's would promptly get to their feet and stand at attention and, of course, the civilians followed suit. I remember missing that little reminder of patriotism and love for our country when I started visiting "regular" movie theaters, those not on-base.
Even though I love retreating to our in-home theater, I sometimes miss watching the huge blockbusters at a local cinema. The palpable excitement of 100+ patrons looking forward to the movie hyped by months of movie trailers and critics' reviews sitting next to you is as addictive as the popcorn. I do still venture out occasionally, but unfortunately, more often than not I'm reminded immediately that common courtesy is not pro forma among the gen pop.
Some of the best things about watching movies at home are curling up in my pj's under a soft fleece blankie (yes, we each have one), eating whatever snacks I want without taking out a small loan first, and being able to cheer/yelp when startled/laugh/snort/weep or even doze as the latest rental plays out.
Those of you who've known me longer than five minutes will know that I love a gangster movie. I can't help it. I know they're dark. And violent. And filled with obscenities. Not unlike my own life. Ha! I kid! Actually, they are so far removed from my own life that I think that's why I'm drawn to them. To think how many movies were and are made about La Cosa Nostra and the like is pretty ridiculous, but it also proves that I'm not the only one intrigued by it. Chalk it up as yet another of my strange addictions.
Some of my favorites include:
- The Godfather - the epitome of the gangster genre
- The Shawshank Redemption - more people should watch it
- Rear Window - CLASSIC Hitchcock
- The Little Mermaid - Where DID I put my banded, bulbous snarfblatt?
- Steel Magnolias - Some of my oft-used quotes come from this movie.
- Broadcast News - "Okay, I'll meet you at the place near the thing where we went that time." I find myself saying similar stuff DAILY. It drives my friends and family crazy, I'm sure. Now I'm divulging where it started. **Quick digression: I've had several conversations over the years that closely resemble that line of dialogue from Broadcast News. One in particular was when I was with a friend and SHE said to me something along the lines of, "Remember that night when we watched that film and the guy went running through the thing?" I totally knew what she was talking about. That's what friends are for. I took it as an accomplishment that I someone I knew was finally communicating like me. My work here is done.
- The Birdcage - Agador Spartacus is ALWAYS a pick me up when I need a giggle.
- Tommy Boy - Stupid humor = guilty pleasure. "That. Was. AWESOME!"
- All About Eve - "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night."
- To Sir, With Love -"I believe one should fight for what one believes. Provided one is absolutely sure one is absolutely right."
- Memento and Inception - Christopher Nolan, your brilliance amazes me.
Can I get back to you on that??

Day 01 — A Favorite Song
Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. ~ Plato
I am not lucky enough to be musically talented. But I am lucky enough to be surrounded by music daily. I am appreciative of it. I am moved, rejuvenated and entranced by it. I am hopelessly addicted to it.
To choose only one favorite song seems an impossible feat. Music evokes memories, dreams, and regrets even. I can be transported in an instant to a time and place in my past when I hear particular songs. If I hear the Carpenters, especially "Top of the World", I'm a small child singing at the top of my lungs riding in the back seat of the car driving through northern California.
If I hear ANY 80's music, I'm immediately back in junior high and high school. I remember when "Freakazoid" wa a song by Midnight Star before it was a cartoon character. I also remember getting my groove on at junior high dances at the youth center on the AF base where we lived at the time. If I hear Journey, I'm in that youth center playing pool. Def Leppard's "Love Bites" brings me directly back to senior prom while "Pour Some Sugar on Me" sends me to Chem II class. When in Rome's "The Promise" finds me working late nights at the grocery store bakery cleaning sheet pans, proofers and ovens.
Ironically, I remember road trips through the Texas panhandle when I hear "Anchorage" by Michelle Shocked.
Certain hymns remind me of my parents; "Open Our Eyes, Lord" reminds me of my dad and "Here I Am, Lord" reminds me of my mom. That particular song also reminds me of my time as a missionary in Mexico. A friend of mine had "Here I Am, Lord" played during her wedding mass and I was reduced to tears when I heard the first few bars of music. Embarrassing, and yet unavoidable.
If I hear Veggie Tales or Backstreet Boys, I'm immediately reminded of dancing around the living room in my small apartment in Euless when my son was a lot younger. These days he's constantly telling me to listen to this indie band, or rapper, or soulful ingenue that happens to be a friend of a friend. And I'd have it no other way. Music feeds my soul.
"For Once In My Life" makes me giddy as I remember dancing with my husband on our wedding day. "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" plays in my head in his voice as he sings it to me when he's missing me. Whether it's because I've been away on travels or he's just been down the road at the office.
But I'm telling you all now, and someone better speak up if they don't hear it, on the day of my funeral at some point I want all of you to hear "In My Life" by The Beatles. And then, when you're down at the pub raising glasses and sharing war stories about me, be sure to sing "Phenomena" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the top of your lungs followed by KC and the Sunshine Band's "Boogie Shoes." In other words, make it a party!
Borrowed a Borrowed Borrow from a Borrower
Isn't it funny how if you use any word over and over again in any or all of its forms it starts to look incorrectly spelled??
So, over at Martin Randomness, they've started a blog challenge without even knowing they challenged me. I don't promise that I will do all of these within 30 days. I may double up on some in order to make the deadline. But I can almost guarantee that I will not do one a day for 30 days. My mind wanders. I let random into my brain to play too many times. I get distracted by shiny things. And cupcakes. (I'm craving some now, but fighting the urge to bake them. I have too many pastries in my kitchen at the moment as it is!)
So here's the list. Feel free to borrow it as well. You KNOW I'll be heading to your blog if you do just to see what your answers are.

Another Random Rant
Dear Facebook,
Thank you for reminding me just how many crazies there are out in the world. Yes, I realize this is the exact same note I sent to American Idol earlier today, but I just thought you'd like to know that your efforts were noted as well. Now...what can you do to prevent all of those said crazies from sending me messages and proposing to me just because they need a wonderful "white" woman to be their friend?? I realize that as a Poli-pino I tend to lose my tan sometime around November 3rd and I lean a little more towards Poli rather than Pino, but I still have faint tan lines. Those should count for something, right?? Thank you in advance to your prompt attention to this matter. I'll leave you to it so that I can take care of the letter from the FBI's Robert Mueller I received in the wee hours this morning. Apparently, he's holding $15 million that needs my urgent attention.
Sincerely,
Zuckerberg's zillionaire friend-in-training

New and Improved?
I'm thinking I need to clean-up my blog a bit. Since I've been gone for so long, I just now realized that Blogger has made some updates which have messed with the managed chaos that is my blog world and some of the links aren't working now. Don't they know I'm no techy genius??? So, having said that, consider it roughly as an invitation to return and see if I've made any changes or if I'm just nagging myself again to no avail.
I'm sure the bookies are making money on that as I type.
I just tried to add a poll, but it didn't work so I guess I'll just have to ask you here instead:
That's all I've got today, people. Come back soon!

I just tried to add a poll, but it didn't work so I guess I'll just have to ask you here instead:
Question: Are you even interested in the movies I watch and the books I read since I offer no reviews (unless asked)?Kindly let me know how you feel as this will aid in the clean-up. Danke schoen! (That is the extent of my German but NOT my extent of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" knowledge. Just so we're clear.)
Answer 1: Leave the list, sometimes I'm looking for a distraction.
Answer 2: Take it off! I can't afford movies and I've been banned from public libraries.
That's all I've got today, people. Come back soon!

I Stalked a Blog Today
This wouldn't be news since I was pretty religious at blog-stalking, but as of late, I've been distracted by other shiny things that I haven't been seeking the entertainment of my effervescent fellow bloggers. Never fear, like a fat kid to chocolate cake and French fries (not together, 'cause that would be kinda yucky...or a foodfest experiment waiting to happen), I found my way back to those blogs I've found comfort in over the years.
Most recently, I had a root around in the "Older Posts" section of "Lady Steele, modern superhero and pink warrior!" It had been so long since I had ventured her way that the tagline had been updated to add the PINK WARRIOR bit. Warrior INDEED!! You go, MrsG! I especially agreed with her post titled "I'm a MEXICAN?!" so much so that I'm adding the comment that I shared with her here for your entertainment as well:
I guess you'll just have to read it for yourself to get the full effect.
Another friend of mine, got me thinking about the truly important things in life and got my own blogging juices flowing. That post will be shared soon. I won't link to that specific blog/post because when I asked in the past for permission to share, she didn't feel comfortable enough to grant it since she felt her blog too personal (more for family/close friends to peruse) and I TOTALLY respect that. And I love her for it. She has some other neat tips that I'll share with you...kind of like re-tweeting, but sometimes it'll be for my own personal use and the fact that
my memory is holier than Swiss cheese (holier in the literal sense, as in "full of holes" rather than
the spiritual sense of "marked by an air of superior piety or morality").
Along the same lines, another blogging buddy is subtly reminding me to appreciate the ones I love for the little things by sharing this tidbit of romance. Now I'm not saying that the hubster doesn't reveal his lovingness to me ever. In fact, those of you who are friends of mine on Facebook, know that just last month he ordered the third book in a series for me from the UK because he knew it wouldn't hit US shelves before I finished the second. I was stoked! And have since finished the series. As much crap as he gives me when I return home from Costco with another one or two (or five...it's happened ONCE, but I can't promise that it won't happen again) books in hand, this was a big leap in feeding my biblioholism. (That MUST be a word. There's a book on it. Swear.) He's an enabler, folks. He really is.
Okay, so. I guess this means I'm officially "back." I was so far out there I didn't know I was gone until I dusted off the blog and looked at the last entry date. Yikes. I've always got tons of randomness swirling around like a whirling dervish in my head so I'm thinking I need to share more of it here, rather than other places. Remind me why my husband doesn't want me to Facebook anymore, 'k?

As a proud, and possibly the only one you'll ever meet, Poli-pino (that's Polish-Filipino, if you MUST ask), I am STILL seeking my demographically correct little box. My son finds it even MORE difficult finding the Poli-pinasian (Poli-pino + Caucasian) box on forms he has to complete. Don't you worry, friend, I married a "foreigner" to blur the lines further...only to be told that my efforts were in vain since my husband is "only" British. Dammit. Foiled again.

An Open Letter to Myself
Dear Self,
I know you get distracted by pretty things, things that shine, things that glitter, things that are red, things that smell nice, things that make you wanna sleep...I see this list is getting long, so we've pretty much established...you get distracted.
Well, um, it's been three months since your last blog post. That's like a fiscal quarter. That's 1/4 of a year. That's ridiculous.
I know your life is not that exciting. I know you shareall most of your random thoughts to your friends on Facebook. But this blog was supposed to serve as a "journal" of sorts, too. And a place to share photos because we all know if you post them on FB then FB owns them. You need to get back on track. Seriously.
Okay, enough nagging. Promise me you'll start blogging again. Soon?
Your fellow slacker,
Self

All-Purpose Post
“Focus on the journey, not the destination.
Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.”
~ Greg Anderson
Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.”
~ Greg Anderson
'Tis true, Greg. Here's a quick rundown of things going on in and around my life this past month:
- Some good friends of ours celebrated TWENTY years of marriage recently. WOWEE! Congrats, Tony and Karen! Also celebrating anniversaries within the last month or so are The Farrs (10 years) and the Martins (8 years). Congratulations to some wonderful couples!
- Made a deposit on a condo rental in SPI...so vacation IS in my/our future. Woooo and indeed hooo!
- Joshua saw three (that I can remember) concerts this summer. Dangit! To be young again.
- We've had several little mini-pool parties this summer or, in other words, I've served two or three dozen pitchers of white sangria. I won't say exactly, in order to protect the innocent. I must say, I can get used to this kind of lifestyle.
- In business news: We went through a rough time in the spring when one of our employees passed away. Something I hope to never have to go through again. We recently hired another employee, extended contracts on a few others, had to let a couple more go and one just moved to another state, so we're now a multi-state employer. Business is going well so far and we really feel blessed. There are things in the works that could potentially increase our size and I'm really hoping it works out. So many people are out of jobs or just plain struggling to stay afloat, believe me, I know how lucky we are right now.
- Joshua has new-found ambition...he attended a leadership retreat in Glen Rose a couple of weeks ago. He wants to change the world and I say "Go for it!" Also, he found out on Saturday that he was accepted into F.L.O.C. He had his interview on Friday and felt pretty confident, but he also knew his peers were also giving good interviews. There were 120 who applied and 50 of those were accepted. Three cheers for J! Hip hip Hooray!

We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties...
...oh, all right, I admit it...a little laziness, too!
June was actually chock-full of blog-worthiness tidbits. It's just a matter of getting photos of said tidbits in order. I have my photos ready and waiting, but J's are on his computer and he has yet to put them on the home network for me to access them. Why does this matter? Well, in truth, it doesn't matter too much...except for the times when his camera was handiest and therefore it contains the Kodak (er, Canon) moments.
I will be back. Hopefully soon!

Long Overdue
Has it really been six and a half weeks since I've updated my blog? Really? I am sooooooooo sorry! And I have TONS to catch up on with y'all. Sit tight. I'm downloading/uploading photos as quick as I can and I'm typing even faster!
Put on your seatbelts...it's going to be a bumpy read (only 'cause there's so much!)!

Theme of the Day: Narcissism

So, if you haven't been to this website, you should. Or maybe I just have a twisted sense of humor.
I really hate those motivational posters that office managers à la David Brent frame and hang on walls in their companies.
I really love these DEmotivational posters because it reminds people not to take themselves to seriously.
This is me. Not taking myself too seriously. Seriously.

THIS Was My Giggle of the Day...No, Really!
Why does this make me laugh so much? Because it starts off as an innocent travel video diary kind of thing...about visiting a goat farm. Not an exotic locale. Not a theme park. Not even the park down the road. A goat farm. Ha!
And to make it worse, I saw it on ANOTHER blog I've just started perusing. You say stalking. I say "perusing." See how that works??
The Birds and the Bees. And the Goats. from TravelSavvyMom on Vimeo.
It's early yet. I'm sure something else will tickle my funny bone before the day ends!

Happy Thanksgiving Meme & Tag
Ok...so...when I got this I felt like an idiot...what's a "Meme"?!?!? Go look it up...I did. I had to.
Anywho...
I have been tagged by my high school friend William who was tagged by his friend Judith in an online Thanksgiving game started by their mutual friend Julie. I left the links in so you could have a gander at their blogs if you're a bit bored, or just procrastinating.
Now that I'm "it," I'm supposed to give two reasons why I'm thankful this year, and then tag another blogger.
So, here goes . . .
1. I'm thankful for my family, small though it may be. I have a great husband who provides not only the basics, but does so lavishly,
dotes on me, gives the best cuddles...and I think he really loves me even though it's not all "high heels and suspenders" anymore and even though we may bicker at times, I have been blessed. And through our marriage I have inherited HIS family, and that makes it all the better!! I also have a "near-perfect" son who keeps me young at heart, makes me laugh and has been another true blessing in my life. He may be a pain in the neck sometimes, but luckily that's been few and far between. I also have the bestest dog in the whole world...he truly gives unconditional love every time I walk in the door.
2. I'm thankful for all the friends I have that are "lifers." Not to be confused with the "lifers" locked away in prisons. I don't have any of those...and hopefully won't have any friends that drop off the deep-end so far that they find themselves with that label! No, I'm talking about the people that have come into my life at some point or another and have hung around for more than just a few days or months. The people that haven't let this thing called life get in the way of our friendship...in fact, have far improved mine because of it! I grew up never having siblings, but in the course of my life I have found people just important as blood-relations.
Finally, I hereby tag one of the best lifers I know...Marisa! Maybe it's just the kick up the jacksie she needs to get blogging again! ;o)

Surfing Destination of the Day

"Howzit, brah? The surf was epic today, fully macking double overhead corduroy to the horizon. Now it's all buggery. Think I'll jet to the food hut and grab a burrito and some sweet nectar. Latronic, dude."*
Did I lose you? Before you open a new tab/browser/window/whatever to bring up BabelFish, they don't translate surfspeak and, luckily, I didn't mean that kind of surfing. Although I wish I knew how to hang ten, I think I need to become a better swimmer first...and move somewhere nearer the sand and surf.
Actually I was just surfing the net, which I tend to do when I'm procrastinating from doing the things I NEED to do. Reader's Digest version: I was watching a movie trailer and ended up finding a website that made the movie geek in me do cartwheels.
The real chain events to this blog post is more:
- see movie title, watched the trailer
- begin to wonder where that expression came from because I can't place it
- realize it's Shakespeare, but still not certain exactly which play
- go to Wikipedia (where have you been?) find the reference to "Shylock" in The Merchant of Venice
- see a link in the "References" section of the entry, not that the movie listed interests me
- find the aforementioned website...SCORE!!
- begin cartwheels
- wonder why I hadn't found site before now because I'm a HUGE fan of a similar site
- realize it's blogworthy
- *find article to quote for beginning of this post, because I always need a segue and remember to give Andrew Shield props for the photo that I found online.
Tell me you DIDN'T click on at least one of the eight links above.
Ha! You're procrastinating, too!
Hang ten!

Tag! You're It!
I had originally titled this post "I'm ONLY a Month Late!" then immediately thought better of it. I can only imagine my inbox overflowing with emails demanding explanation but also why the long-awaited information had not been sent directly to varying locales across the globe via phone or internet. Let me clear things up...I am NOT pregnant. Yet.
My fellow alum chum William tagged me a month ago (I wouldn't have believed it was that long ago, but I checked myself!!) from his blog and I'm just remembering to follow up on my promise to play.
Without further ado...
10 Years Ago I . . .
1. lived in my FIRST apartment away from home. Do you hear the Mary Tyler Moore theme tune playing...ah, the days of being a single girl working in the big city.
2. drove a burgundy Ford Taurus aka "The Pimp Mobile" because the tinted windows were at least 5 shades darker than what was legal.
3. worked for the best boss I've ever had before or since, other than myself, of course. I'm glad to call him a friend these days, and not just the guy I have to ask for a day off! ;o)
4. took a roadtrip back to Lubbock and realized that for all intents and purposes I'll always consider it my "hometown," even now that my parents are gone.
5. discovered strengths in myself I never knew I had and being a single mom wasn't so bad!
5 Things on Today's To-Do List
1. Laundry
2. Figure out what I'm making for the 11th Annual Thanksgiving Party. Can't wait to see y'all!
3. Finish the invitation for The Company Holiday Party and send them out!
4. Catch up on some organizing...or moving one pile of stuff to another...whatever.
5. Watch the Results Show for the DWTS semi-final.
5 Snacks I Enjoy
1. Grapes
2. Queso/Salsa and Chips
3. Cheese and crackers
4. Onion rings.
5. Chocolates...all kinds...don't hesitate to send me some new variation to try. ;o)
5 Places I've Lived
1. Kadena, AFB, Okinawa, Japan.
2. Beale AFB and Marysville, California.
3. Loring AFB, Maine.
4. Lubbock, Texas.
5. Euless, Texas.
5 Jobs I've Had
1. Courtesy clerk...yeah, ok...a sacker. I sacked groceries. Happy?
2. Butcher. Baker. Candlestick Maker.
3. Bartender.
4. Convention Director.
5. Account Manager.
Tag, You're It! Hopefully YOU won't take as long as I did!
1. Marisa at Holy Cow!
2. Mary Kate at Martin Randomness.
3. Britta, the Vice Chancellor of Sunshine.
4. Janet at The Girl Who...

Seriously?
Has it really been over a MONTH since I've blogged?? I so suck at this. I've gotta get back on track!

- Does this really matter? Who reads this anyway? Seriously. Okay, fine. I'm probably the only Poli-pino you'll ever meet and I: like to cook up a good meal (but if given the choice I'd rather eat out); watch TV and films from here and there; love to laugh and try to do it often; hate to cry but end up doing so...and often; believe we ALL make a difference to SOMEONE at SOME POINT; love long walks on the beach, it's cheesy, I know, but I do love them especially with my family; wish I was as erudite as Stephen Fry, as cleverly comedic as (too many to name here) and as oblivious as Mr. Bean. Obviously I could go on...that's why I started the blog!
